Coptic

Coptic

This book is housed between two wooden boards. Everything is stitched together. No glue has been used. The book lays flat. Great for copying the pages you have made and if you are a left-handed drawer/writer, no problem with a bulky book.

Long Stitch

Long Stitch

This book was designed out of necessity. When I was in my first year of art school we were asked to keep a sketch book. When I tried to keep a store purchased sketchbook, I felt my work was not worthy of it. I made this long stitch book from a cereal box and used a computer part for the opening and came up with the beginning of the desire to want to write more in books I make.

Magnet closed butterfly box to protect 1st sketchbook

Magnet closed butterfly box to protect 1st sketchbook

I found a way that satisfied my desire to create and not waste. I would take old rubbings from manhole covers, maps and whatever else that would inspire me to draw and create and cover the magnet closed butterfly box with a variety of those materials.

Small

Small

Nothing goes to waste. These small books are great for little people. They are wonderful for drawing small watercolor portraits and having them in your purse or pocket to pull-out when ever you need to change your mind. It's like having a personal collection you can carry with you... depending on what you put in the book. Imagine a bunch of sweetly, tiny, intimately drawn cakes or dogs or cats or shoes or bags.

Various Books

Various Books

These books were small, intimate, fun, easy to hold in a hand or put in a purse or pocket. I used found wallpapers to cover the books.

Magboxes

Magboxes

The top box is a magnet closed box. Once you learn how to make a magnet closed box, it's very satisfying. The bottom two you may recognize as my first sketchbook.

Traveling Enigma

Traveling Enigma

This box set was developed for a photography collective who was looking for ways to create some additional income for their cause. Their art. I developed three boxes and this was the chosen one. A slim case, when opened revealed a souvenir from the photographer, an address book and seven postcards. There was an online site that you could order more postcards from. The idea was to keep people writing and keep the photographers images circulating.

Boxset

Boxset

This was one of my very favorite projects to complete. I made everything from the box to the books completely from the beginning.

You open the box lid and revealed is a nice sketchbook that you can easily pull out with one finger. The lid is lined with the same marbled paper that was used for the end papers of the book. After lifting the book, revealed is a secret compartment, lift that lid and there lies another sweet, smaller book. There was enough room in the secret compartment to put ephemera and other artifacts. This commission was created for a friend who traveled to Ireland and wanted to make sure she could keep some found objects as well as her sketches in one place.

Half Clam Shell box

Half Clam Shell box

This box wraps up and looks very similar to a book. A great way to house a book or glass beads or marbles or any other beautiful thing you don't want to get dusty.

This is a close-up picture of what the front of the book looks like. You can hold little images, cards, notes... A great way to give a gift that is from more than one person. This book is so easy to make.

This is the back-side of an origami book developed by Hedi Kyle. It's all about the folds. This side has little pockets for holding ephemera, found objects, tickets, papers, notes to organize later.
